Overview
Lake Manyara National Park covers an area of 390 square kilometers. The center ofthe park is a ground water reservoir which is partially fed by small riversflowing down the steep slopes. There are hot water springs which appeared during the formation of the Great Rift Valley. The lake attracts huge flocks ofbirds. Thousands of flamingos gather here, their pink plumage reflected beautifully in the waters of the lake. Other species of bird found here include pelicans, storks, sacred ibis and Egyptian geese. It is here that visitors canwatch tree-climbing lions that spend hours resting on the branches of theacacia trees, three to seven meters above the ground.
Description
Lake Manyara National Park is one of Tanzania’s most picturesque wildlife destinations, located at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, approximately 126 km (78 miles) southwest of Arusha. Covering 330 km² (127 sq mi), with nearly two-thirds of the park occupied by the shallow alkaline Lake Manyara, the park is renowned for its breathtaking scenery, diverse ecosystems, and rich wildlife. From dense groundwater forests and open grasslands to acacia woodlands, hot springs, and the expansive lakeshore, Lake Manyara offers an incredible variety of habitats within a relatively compact area.
The park is famous for its tree-climbing lions, one of its most iconic attractions, although sightings are not guaranteed. It is also home to large herds of elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, hippos, baboons, blue monkeys, and numerous antelope species. Lake Manyara is a paradise for birdwatchers, with over 400 recorded bird species, including thousands of pink flamingos, pelicans, storks, cormorants, kingfishers, and birds of prey that thrive around the lake and surrounding wetlands.
In addition to classic game drives, visitors can enjoy a range of unique experiences, including the Manyara Treetop Walkway, which offers a bird’s-eye view of the forest canopy, guided nature walks, birdwatching, and breathtaking viewpoints overlooking the Great Rift Valley.
