Trekking Overview

This route starts from the Northern side of the mountain, along Tanzania and Kenya border, it offers great opportunities of seeing wildlife compare to other routes. There’s several variations of this route beginning with minimum 5 days to 7 days including of acclimatization day. It is an alternative route to Marangu route for those who are looking for least crowded trail.

 

Day 01: Kilimanjaro International Airport - Arusha

On arrival at the airport you will be met and transfer to Arusha for overnight stay

Day 02: Arusha – Rongai Gate / Simba Camp (Altitude 2800m) (trekking hours – 3 – 4)

After early breakfast you will be met by your mountain guides for pre – climb briefing also checking climbing gears then drive to Rongai starting gate via Marangu gate for trekking permit. Overnight stay at Simba Camp

Day 03: Simba Camp – Rongai Second Cave (altitude 3,460) (trekking hours – 3 – 4)

After early breakfast you will have morning walk up to the Second Cave the walk is steady uphill with superb views of Kibo and the Eastern ice fields on the crater rim. The afternoon can be spend for leisure or doing a short acclimatization walk up towards Third Cave.

Day 04: Rongai Second Cave – Kikelelwa (altitude 3,600) (trekking hours – 3 – 4)

You will leave the main trail and strike out across the moorland on a smaller path towards the jagged peaks of Mawenzi. Campsite is in a sheltered valley with giant scenarios near Kikelelwa Caves. After a hot lunch there is time to wander in the valleys and see the special vegetation.

Day 05: Kikelelwa – Mawenzi Tarn Hut (altitude 4,220) (trekking hours – 4 – 5)

This is an extra day meant for acclimatization and can be spent day hiking on Mawenzi Ridge. The unique landscape offers motivating views of Kibo and Mawenzi. After spending a few moments exploring the area we head back to Mawenzi Tarn for overnight.

Day 06: Mawenzi Tarn – Kibo hut (altitude 4,700) (trekking hours – 5 – 6)

We cross the lunar desert of the ‘Saddle’ between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach Kibo hut. Guides will have an early briefing for the summit ascent.

Day 07: Kibo hut – Summit (5,895m) / Horombo Hut (3,700m) (trekking hours – 12 – 14)

At mid night you will be awaken by your guides and mountain crews for a light breakfast and summit ascent, enjoy couple of minutes at the summit but depends on the weather. Descend back to Kibo hut for brunch and continue down to Horombo Hut for the dinner and overnight.

Day 08: Horombo Hut – Marangu gate – Arusha (trekking hours 6-7)

A stable descent takes us down through tropical rain forest and once we reach at Marangu gate, we collect our summit certificates. Then we will be met our driver who will drive to Arusha for hot shower and celebration of the achievement

Day 09: Arusha – Kilimanjaro International Airport

After breakfast, morning at leisure then you will be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your flight back home.
