Trekking Overview

The Machame Route is known as the “Whiskey Route”, is the second most popular route on the mountain. The Machame route is considered as a tough trail though its suit those who are more adventurous, the minimum days recommended is 6 days but extending to 7 days with acclimatization day which makes more sense with ability to reach the summit.

 

Day 01: Kilimanjaro International Airport - Arusha

On arrival at the airport after customs and immigration formalities meet and greet by your driver who will drive you to Arusha for leisure where if time allows you will be met by Kili trekking crew for briefing also for checking climbing gears

Dinner and overnight
Day 02: Arusha >> Machame Gate – Machame Camp (Altitude 3500m) (trekking hours 6-7)

Breakfast at your lodge then you will depart to Machame gate for registration, after that you will be walking along the rain forest to Machame Camp for overnight.

Day 03: Machame Camp – Shira Cave Camp (Altitude 3840m) (trekking hours 6-7)

After breakfast, you will start walking along the heather moorland zone to Shira Cave Camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 04: Shira Cave Camp – Baranco via Lava tower (Altitude 3900m) (trekking hours 7-8)

After the breakfast you will be walking on the alpine desert zone to Barranco Camp via Lave tower (4500m) for acclimatization then descend to the same altitude to Barranco camp for overnight.

Day 05: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp (Altitude 4100m) (trekking hours 4-5)

After the breakfast early in the morning start the day via Barranco wall (breakfast wall) to Karanga Camp, a little bit challenging climbing the wall but most spectacular view from the wall, it will be a short day trek where afternoon we will reach to our camp for leisure. Overnight stay at Karanga Camp

Day 06: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp (Altitude 4500m) (trekking hours 3-5)

Another short trek and day of acclimatization as you are near the mountain’s peak. The scenic climb to Barafu is mostly on a moraine with a view of Mawenzi peak towering majestically to the right, and overhead, Kibo peak seemingly just out of reach. Guides will have an early briefing for the summit ascent.

Day 07: Ascent to Summit (5895m) / Mweka Camp (Altitude 3200m) (trekking hours 12-14)

At mid night you will be awaken by your guides and mountain crews for a light breakfast and summit ascent, enjoy couple of minutes at the summit but depends on the weather. Descend back to Barafu Camp for brunch and continue down to Mweka Camp for the dinner and overnight.

Day 08: Mweka Camp to the Gate then Arusha (trekking hours 3-4)

After breakfast descend down to Mweka Gate through the rain forest, where on arrival you will check out and rewarded certificates then you will be having a farewell celebration with climbing crew. After that you will drive to Arusha where a warm shower and a comfortable bed will be waiting for you.

Dinner and overnight
Day 09: Arusha – Kilimanjaro International Airport

After breakfast you will have an option of proceeding on safari in Northern circuit or leisure in Zanzibar or transferred to airport for your onward flight to your next destination.
